- We've all heard that phrase. Maybe even bought the T-shirt online or off of Bragg Boulevard. While in some ages and in some areas of the world that line of reasoning was acceptable, today it isn't. For the international military contractor, engaging in, ordering, or otherwise causing unjustified killing or suffering in conflict has potentially severe legal consequences. Most American combat troops get a basic dose of "the law of war" before deployments. Civilian contractors need to know much more since - although they may not (yet) be subject to the UCMJ (there's movement in that direction) - they can be tried by U.S. or another nation's courts and, increasingly likely, by the International Criminal Court.
